About GFA: History of Governor French Academy

The Governor French Academy began as a plan devised by a small group of teachers who believed that the existing schools in the Illinois suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri were not preparing students well for college.

The Governor French Academy opened in September of 1983 with eleven students in grades 9 and 10. After only one month of operation as a High School, the faculty quickly came to realize that in order to effectively train its students for demanding college curricula it would be necessary to develop a grade school program. Therefore, by the middle of the Academy's fourth year Governor French's program provided classes for students from kindergarten to grade twelve. In 1997 the Academy expanded to include younger students in its Form K Program for students who are at least four years old.

The Governor French Academy has grown into a school that seeks to individualize its curriculum as much as possible to meet the particular needs of each student. In so doing the Academy has become well known for the high quality of the skills displayed by its students in the areas of mathematics and science. Teachers from as far away as Japan, Norway, and Senegal have visited the Academy to study its academic success.

Admission counseling and scholarship advocacy are two areas in which the Governor French Academy offers services that are often neglected by other schools. The last three graduating classes of Academy students have averaged $32,000 in scholarships and grants. Fourteen percent of the 1998 graduating class were ranked as National Merit Scholars. These are exciting, tangible results of an effective financial advocacy program.

The Governor French Academy has also gone beyond the services that are generally expected of competitive preparatory schools. Every educational act it performs, from Form K to Senior students, addresses the needs of the contemporary student who faces the standardized testing, writing, studying, cultural literacy, and financial requirements of a college education. Governor French is in the forefront of the movement to deliver these services electronically through teleconferencing and other distance learning techniques.
